Perhaps not surprisingly, the traditional radio astronomy division between the small-D/large-N and large-D/small-N reflector camps emerged early and, by the time of an important Sydney meeting in 1997, there were also well-formed views on the merits of dense aperture arrays for operation below 1.5 GHz. As the science requirements began to creep beyond the original " hydrogen telescope " and the operating frequency range increased accordingly, it was clear even in 1997 that a combination of antenna technologies was needed. By the time of an international meeting at Berkeley in 2001 there were a number of ideas and performance claims on the table. One of the first actions of the newly-formed International Engineering and Management Team (IEMT) was to bring some order to the situation by asking concept proponents to write end-to-end exposition documents, in the form of discussion white papers. While these papers were to outline particular antenna and related technologies, they were very much seen as vehicles for presenting SKA overall system design ideas and preliminary cost estimates. Despite some initial scepticism, " best shot " concept white papers were completed and formed the basis of a most profitable science and engineering interaction in Groningen in 2002. As challenges emerged and responses were made, the papers and their revisions provided the basis for discussion over the ensuing years. Many of the later discussions centred on the feasibility of " hybrid " (or composite) designs incorporating more than one antenna concept. All of the white papers and many of the related documents are available via One of the more important outcomes of the 2002 SKA white paper process was the demonstration that concepts had far more in common than many of their proponents realized. Part of the Penticton gathering in 2004 involved an engineering retreat at which an elementary SKA cost and performance modelling …

Agile Software Engineering and Systems Engineering at SKA Scale

Systems Engineering (SE) is the set of processes and documentation required for successfully realising large-scale engineering projects, but the classical approach is not a good fit for software-intensive projects, especially when the needs of the different stakeholders are not fully known from the beginning, and requirement priorities might change. The SKA is the ultimate software-enabled tele...

Expression of Recombinant Streptokinase from Streptococcus Pyogenes and Its Reaction with Infected Human and Murine Sera

Objective(s): Streptokinase (SKa) is an antigenic protein which is secreted by Streptococcus pyogenes. Streptokinase induces inflammation by complement activation, which may play a role in post infectious diseases. In the present study, recombinant streptokinase from S. pyogenes was produced and showed that recombinant SKa protein was recognized by infected human sera using Western blot analy...

Memo 57 SKA system definition and costing : a first approach

Despite the existence of several antenna concepts for the SKA much of the instrument’s top-level design can be described in terms that are common to all concepts. This is not surprising of course since a great deal of the design process centres on transporting and processing common information volumes and rates derived from prescribed fields-of-view, observing bandwidths etc. In this short pape...

SKA Survey Optimization

In this study we examine the science and engineering issues involved in optimizing the SKA for survey science. Three Key Science projects require all-sky or 1000 sq deg surveys. Survey science requires low frequency, low resolution images with superb image quality, which imposes stringent requirements on the calibration and sidelobe levels at every stage of beam formation. The cost of data proc...

Delivering SKA Science V2.2

The SKA will be capable of producing a stream of science data products that are Exa-scale in terms of their storage and processing requirements. This Google-scale enterprise is attracting considerable international interest and excitement from within the industrial and academic communities. In this chapter we examine the data flow, storage and processing requirements of a number of key SKA surv...
